Explainer
Design engineering is designing and building a product in one loop. One person, or one small team, makes the design decisions and ships them as working software, with AI tools doing the heavy lifting in between.
It used to take a designer, a developer and a few weeks of handoff. Now one person with Figma, Claude and ChatGPT can go from idea to working product in a day. What they need is not more tools: it's the judgment to know what's good.
A design engineer doesn't finish a design and hand it over. They design a little, build a little, look at what came out, and go round again. AI makes each turn of the loop cheap, so the loop runs many times a day.
01
Design
Decide what it should be: the layout, the words, the type, the colour.
02
Build
Make it real, in code, with AI writing most of it from your design.
03
Judge
Look at it like a user would. Keep what works, fix what doesn't.
The old way passed the work from hand to hand, and every pass lost something. The new way keeps it in one pair of hands.

A Figma frame is no longer a picture of the product. With AI reading your design, it's the first draft of the code. The design engineer's job is to make the design clear enough to build from, and then to check the build against it.

Code
<Hero><h1>Fresh bread, every morning</h1><Button tone="accent">Order ahead</Button></Hero>
1
Sketch a new screen in Figma with the brief open next to it.
2
Ask Claude to build it from the frame, using the design system's tokens.
3
Open the result and use it on a phone. Note what feels off.
4
Fix the spacing and the copy yourself, then ask the AI to match.
5
Ship it, watch how people use it, and start the loop again.
AI can make a hundred versions of anything. It can't tell you which one is right for this product, these people and this moment. That is the whole job.
01
Taste
Knowing why one layout reads clearly and another feels off, when both are technically fine.
02
Trade-offs
Choosing what to leave out, which rule to break, and when good enough is good enough.
03
People
Remembering there's a person on the other side of the screen, with a goal, a bad connection and no time.
Three sets of skills, held by one person. None of them has to be deep on day one. All of them get better every time the loop runs.
